The Painting and Craft Prizes aim to showcase the talented artists & crafters that live in the Northern Rivers and foster a love of the creative arts in our community.
2024 entries were exhibited at The Roxy Gallery, Summerland Way Kyogle from the 17th of January 2024.

The rules of still life apply to make a balanced picture.

Still Life Painting Prize – Senior

First Place

Marion Arent – Pumpkin Pair

The geometrical squares of the tablecloth balance out the two thirds of the painting and the two pumpkins take up the other third.

The shapes of the pumpkins relate to one another, their elongated segments relating to the squares of the tablecloth – overall the tones of the cloth and the subject matter are in unison and make a complete picture enjoyable to the eye!

Second Place

Marion Arent – Pepino Melons

The circle containing the subject matter is central to the work taking up one third of the painting with the with melon stalks emphasising the internal circle shape of the melons.

The whole circle is projected from the work by using a square frame. The tones of the negative areas around the circle and the colour of the frame compliment the painting and make it central to the eye!

Second Place

Ron Moore – Still Life, Water Colour

This subject matter and its placement is typical of any still life with the side melon and the two pumpkins pushing in to compliment and support the big melon.

The negative area of the painting, one third, is in proportion to the subject matter. The horizontal shapes compliment the vertical shape making the whole pleasing to the eye!!
